A ficlet for the Vamb drabble challenge (it finished up a drabble X5, hence ficlet 😉 ). Prompt by Caff to use this Poe quote – Then I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.

“Then I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.” Kathryn tossed back the last mouthful of her drink.
Chakotay snorted. “Insanity? No surprise there but didn’t anyone warn you that out here sanity is to be avoided at all costs?”
“Hey, I’m giving it my best shot.”
“And going gangbusters; you’re hardly a poster child for mental health right now.”
“Charming! What would you know, Mr. Let’s-Have-Another-Round-Of-the-Purple-Stuff.” She picked up a garish bottle and waved it at him. “This smacks of self-destructive tendencies if ever I saw them.” Thumping the bottle back on the table, Kathryn tried to sit up but listed precariously to port – her elbow sliding off the table’s edge and her chin nearly hitting the tabletop. She grimaced as she righted herself for the umpteenth time. “You’d think they’d do a better job of keeping this space station stationary. The damned thing is weaving and dipping all over the place. It’s unnerving.”
“I rest my case. You’re nuts.”
“No more than you. Which reminds me, I’m hungry.”
“What reminds you?” Chakotay’s hopes skyrocketed with the thought that she might finally be hungry for him.
“Are you going to order them or should I?”
His hopes instantly deflated. “Order what?”
“Nuts to nibble on.”
It was worse than he’d first thought – she was certifiable – but he couldn’t help smiling as she plonked her elbow on the table again and then resting her chin on her hand, attempted to give him a flirtatious smoky-eyed look.
“You’re a handsome man, Commander, did you know that?”
Was she trying to seduce him after all? He met her gaze with an intense look of his own but then spent a frustrating minute or two trying to catch one or both of her unfocussed eyes – to no avail. This wasn’t the elegant seduction that he’d always imagined.
But she was smiling happily – insanity well and truly established.
He grinned as her elbow began to slide off the table once more. Yep, there she went again – slumping into the corner of the booth in an ungainly heap. She was almost under the table – literally.
He reached across, grabbed her by the front of her jacket and hauled her upright. “You’re a lightweight, Janeway.”
“Take me home to bed.”
“Or yours, I don’t care.”
“You might in the morning.”
She shook her head. “If I do, just threaten me with more of the purple stuff.”
“We’ve already established that but I’m having a moment of sanity right now and looking forward to some long intervals of delicious insanity later.”
Without another word, he hauled her from her seat, wrapped his arm around her and ordered a beam out to his quarters.
Just before the transporter enveloped them, Kathryn grabbed the half-empty bottle of purple stuff.
Insanity was at a premium and they might be needing it later.
